| Hi Marty, Got the Facebook link and just read the article on Berger's. What memories that stirred... The tradition in my family involved regular visits to Berger's too. Every Saturday night, my father would drive into "town" to pick up the Sunday papers (always the News, Times and Herald-Tribune). In the same stationery store, I would be allowed to pick up 3 comic books (at 10 cents apiece). We would go from there to Berger's where my father would order three corned beef, Roast Beef and/or Pastrami sandwiches for my parents and I to have as a late night "snack" while we perused the papers and comics. I also recall that there were three men we knew behind the counter (Saturday night being a very busy night at Berger's) and they were all my neighbors. The elder was Mr. Honig (Sol?), the two younger men were his sons-in-law, Milton and Henry. His daughters, Edith and Estelle, lived with their families and in-laws on Beach 37th street, near me. I was friendly with one of the sons, Ronnie Arrick (Milton and Edith's son). Milton, tragically, died at a very young age and the family later moved out on the Island. Those are the memories prompted by that article. Many thanks and Happy Holidays. Andy Hertz FRHS 1962 |
