Curley's Hotel, which was destroyed in 1968 by a fire caused by three kids playing with matches, was located on the boardwalk at Beach 116th St. The comedian George Carlin was conceived here during a weekend when his parents escaped the stifling confines of their Bronx apartment in August of 1936. The head of one of the statues that graced the entrance of Curley's is about all that remains from the 1968 fire. It was rescued from the ruins and preserved through the years for all to admire. Photo Credit: The Dean Georges Collection
