Here
is a most unusual postcard. It is printed on a piece of real leather.
It shows a Victorian woman hiking up her skirt. A little mouse says "not
a man in sight''at Rockaway Beach. The card was actually mailed in 1906.
Amazing what you could get for a penny way back then. |
This
postcard appears to be a pencil sketch. The area "Rockaway Beach"
is printed or stamped at the bottom of the card. I suppose this card was
the same for many localities. What did they do to me in Rockaway Beach?
Make a horse's rear out of me?? |
This
is a great view of the old Rockaway's Playland midway. My parents took
me there when I was a child. So many wonderful memories. I think they
tore the place down in 1985 and now the site is occupied by private homes.
I find that kind of sad. |

Don't
you just love postcards with animals on them? I didn't think they allowed
dogs on the beach at Rockaway - at least not during the summer months.
I have no idea of what the card means when it says: "fun for one
- but not for the other" Do you?? |
Weiss
is the place to eat! What a treat! Many times my grandparents would take
the Cross Bay Boulevard Bridge over to Broad Channel to spend a few hours
at this restaurant. I think the toll was only a dime back in those days.
I wonder what they charge to cross the bridge these days. I am told it
was the raise in toll charges that finally put Weiss out of business. |
This
looks like a real photograph. The postcard was mailed in 1941 from a Brooklyn/Rockaway
Park mailing address. The message writing looks like a little child. I
know it could not have been me. I was not born yet in 1941. It might have
been my brother. I see my grandmother addressed the card for him. Bro
was probably in first grade at the time. His handwriting was always awful.
You really don't see that many postcards showing Rockaway Point and Breezy
Point scenes. This is probably an unusual card. Do you recognize any of
these people?? |
