I spent many summers at Rockaway Beach. We would go to the beach by St.JohnsHome for boys and Stella Maris. I remember Fitzgeralds Bar and of course PLayLand. My Grandma had a bungelow around the corner from there. Oh those summer nights. Wednesday nights was fireworks from the Barges. Ahhh Summer!!! Thanks for sharing

Fantastic site. One of the very best neighborhood websites I've seen. I lived in Woodside and used to take my kids and their friends to Rockaway Beach all summer long. In the early 1960's we rented a bungalow on 98th Street where the whole community was Irish. There were barbecues, Labor Day costume parade, and lots of company and fun. It was a great time. Thanks for the memories.

WOW! What a flashback to Old Irish Town Rockaway, definitley the unofficial 33rd County of Ireland. Thanks to all who put this together and those who signed the guestbook. Keep it coming. I grew up on 113th St. with my sister Patsy (Tubridy)and brothers Mike and kevin. We had the "all-year rounders" The Burke's, Moore's, Boyle's, Beckers, Rippe's, etc.) and the many wonderful "down for the summers" families from the Bronx & NYC staying at Seaview Faulkner's, Frains and McCrystal's Houses. My grandparents, Bridie and Jim McCrystal moved from Washington Heights (Incarnation Parish)to 113 st. in 1955 and my parents (Margie and Marty Murphy) bought the house right next door to Big Momma's on 113th St in 1963. What a great place to live, learn and cherish!I remember the lines @ Harbor Bakery, Wed night fire works and concerts, St. Camillus Marching Band (the best), Martin's Corner,Bogie's cheeseburgers and clam chowder, Rohrs Ice Cream Parlor and my first Prime Rib dinner & cold beer with Mom @ Roger's Hotel dining room. My children continue to hear the stories & memories to this date. God bless!

Marty.. Read the Times "Obit" this morning, with great sorrow on the passing of another "Irish Town" great. Gil Clancy, boxing world promoter, manager, trainer, announcer and inductee in Boxing Hall of Fame. Gil was my 8th grade Phys. Ed teacher in P.S.44 (along with Jim Barrows).. Gil's dad was a local sign painter, who did several jobs for my family businesses. May he rest in piece.

Great pictures! Spent many summer days in Rockaway. I have a question: what is the name of the bar that was next to the batting cage on 103rd St? It would be the first bar you'd come to (on the left)as you walked from the beach towards Rockaway Blvd? I thought it was the O'Connell House, but I see I'm wrong about that. The O.H. was across 103rd St from the bar I'm talking about. I remember they used to have loud speakers at the batting cage blaring out rock music. Whenever I hear Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock", I think of the batting cage, since that's where I first remember hearing the song.

Great pictures, brought back so many memories of going on the train to Rockaway and going on the CYCLONE. My Dad would take us for a ride at night from Ridgewood to cool the kids off, no air conditioning. Thanks
