We teenagers would travel down to rockaway from the Inwood section of manhattan with $2.00 to rent a room in the Dublin House. When you opened the door you just could slide into the bed because the floor was slanted. But who cared? We danced all night at the Sligo house,Gildays (who threw me out when he saw how young I was) the best dancers came out of those halls and the best times of my teenage years were there.

Thank you for the wonderful trip down memory lane. Lived in The Bronx and summered in Rockaway for 20 years on 91 St in the bungleows across the street from where Felix Gilroy lived. Gilroy owned the bar on 90th St and was where we spent many nights doing the savoy. A place and a time I will always remember.
I loved all the pictures of Irish Town. Great work and will share this website with others.

I was born in the Rockaway Beach Hospital, lived on Beach 81st Street, went to P.S.44 until the 4th Grade, then moved to Beach 13th Street, Far Rockaway,& P.S. 39 & laster JHS 198, Benjamin N. Cardoza JHS, until 1957. Then moved to Woodmere, New York. I walked those streets & the boardwalk many, many times. My Father owned Fairview Cafeteria n Beach 84th Street & Rockaway Beach Blvd. then built Chris' Restaurant & Luncheonette on Beach 86th Street & Rockaway Beach Blvd. The Summers in the Rockaways we only equaled by Coney Island. Crowds galore appeared on the Beaches like never seen again. Rockaway's Playland was a treat for us especially on P.A.L. Day, we were given free tickets to go on all the rides. Memories are the best thing we have now. I thank you for sharing & allowing us to go down Memory Lane. We were & will have our hearts in the Rockaways no matter where we go to settle. Unfortunately, our Children & Grandchildren will never know the USA the way it was when we were experiencing LIFE growing up in the Rockaways. I am in constant communication with several Friends that grew up in the Rockaways, & I cherish those Friendships. Thank you again.

I spent some time every summer at The Beach. Some summers on St. Mark's Ave.,Some summers (late 1950's)at McManus'-Even lost My HS ring in the sand and one of the boys down the street found it for me. I was taking care of the McManus boys while the family went out to dinner with the relatives from New Orleans. Now have a bungalow on 109th St.(Brewster Court) and all my grandchildren have their Rockaway memories. Once you have sand in your shoes, you'll always come back.

I began my life in Rockaway! My Mom & Dad were vacationing at Mrs. Hartman's Rooming House when they had to rush to NYC for my early birth. All the pix brought back memories, especially the pix of St. Cammllus Church where I was baptized.
