What a tribute to a place that's is always in my heart and memoery. I grew up on 104St over the Merimaid until we moved to Belle Harbor. My dad had Arthur's Restaurant and Mermaid Bar across the Blvd. Marty did you go to FRHS?

Great Photos evoking Greater memories...grew up in Rego Park but we "summered" on the " Irish Rivera " every year ,first house on the boardwalk Beach 114 St...I saw Tom McManus and Brian McManus commenting earlier, they were Belle Harbor lads who spent summers on 114 ST in their families large homes rented to the likes of my family...there were 9 Grubb brothers and sisters who crowded into 2 basement rooms and we thought we were living large.one of my first paying jobs was working at Curleys for 90 cents an hour..supplemented my income by hauling Beach Chairs and Umbrellas for Harry Nemith on the boardwalk....one of my best friends is Pat Gildea of the Gildea "Beer Garden " clan...odd that he also spent the summer at " the beach" on 96 St but we did not see each other until we headed back home to begin school...in later years many night was spent at Manns, Fitzgeralds or McGuires...later worked tending bar for John McGuire at Pep-McGuires in Kew Gardens while I was paying my way thru St Johns Univ...I live in Florida now but whenever I get up to visit Mom we always take a drive to " the beach "...still one of the unsung best beaches in the NE..."dog" ball on the beach at night, hit it in the water at hi tide and it was a homer..ring a levio , johnny ride the pony , rubber band rifles from orange crates that shot pieces of roof shingles, Mameys for Ice cream , the Park theater on a rainy day in the upstairs section , fishing off the barge at 116 ST nd the bay when a nickel brought you a drop line hook & sinker and a large clam for bait was also a nickel, Wednesday night fireworks after listening to the music from St Johns Boys home...large beers in tall paper cups from the Whitehouse, very spirited competitive basketball games at 108 St park, having the local cop from the 101 precinct chasing us off the railings on the boardwalk...collecting all the colors of the wriststring needed to get into the Pool on 114 ST, hot dogs and fries from Tweenies, lots and lots of ve...

Love the site. Brings back memories I had long since forgotten. My family liver on 213 St. in Manhattan but always rented a bungalow between 87th and 88th street right next to the el every summer. The six or seven bungalows were dubbed Reingold Alley as everyone was well stocked with that beverage of choice. We eventually mover to Far Rockaway for a few years but as a teenager every day during the summer I would ride my bike back to the 80's. We palyed sand lot baseball there in a real sand lot (4 teams), basketball and handball by the beach and of course lazed on the beach every day. I also fondly recall watching the Schaffer beer weekly sponsored fireworks shows from the beach with friends. Thanks for the memories. Ray, GSS '56, Far Rockaway HS 1960

Ah the Dublin House. When I was 15 years old I started drinking (beer)there. I lived on 140th street from 1931 to 1955. My friends mostly Irish Catholic and some were Jewish and I was neither. The Corrigan's, the Cleary's, the Nugent's. What a life. The anti-aircraft guns along the beach in 1944. The things that use to wash up on the beach during WWII and some of it was edible like the cans of shredded coconut and powdered beets! Anyone who was around then, please contact me. axxxxxxx

What a great site!!! I am a "narrowback" from the Bronx and my family took a week at the Holland House on Beach 115th Street for about 3 straight years. Despite having incredibly fair skin which considerably limited my beach time during the day, I have very fond memories of Playland, Pizza, watching the McNultys dance and Ruthie Morrissey sing. My mother and father and my brother and I would spend the week in a one roomm efficiencey and think we were living in style and we were!!!

This brought back such fond memories of my summers in Rockaway. My parents spent their summers in Rockaway and my grandparents actually lived there for awhile. We rented the first floor of the Cory's house on 115th street for years. I remember meeting my dad at the train coming from work and my mom dragging the playpen and carriage down to the beach. My grandfather gave me my first fishing rod in Rockaway. It was some of the happiest times of my life.

A fantastic surprise - a tribute to the descendents of immigrants who made "The Rockaways" - "The Irish Riviera". My first husband John Francis McDonald worked during summer months bartending at the "Mermaid", he was from Inwood upper Manhattan. Kudos to all who contributed to this trip down Memory Lane.

Thanks for a wonderful read and a roadmap to some wonderful memories. Lived in Rockaway for the 1st 22 years of my life and in the summers lived in the bungalows behind Boggiano & McWalter's Bar & Grill and worked in their pizza/hamburger stand opposite Playland. Remember Irish Town and the fun and excitement of the area. Was too young to go into the bars but remember them well. Now live in Brisbane, Australia which is a really nice place but my heart will always reside in Rockaway. Thanks for rekindling those fond memories.
